- SKOs run January–February. Most companies kick off in Q1 to line up with new targets.
- Planners start 16–20 weeks out, so supplier briefs for late-January and February SKOs land in November and December. That's now.
- One SKO hires a lot of people: AV crew, MC, DJ, live percussion, photographers, caterers, team-builders, branding and print.
- Pitch an SKO package, not your year-end rate card. Planners buy reliability and clear quotes.
- HowzitLive opens to corporate clients in January 2027. Free to list, you set your rates, payouts the Friday after.
Howzit, vendors. December is mad with year-ends, then it goes quiet and everyone panics about January. Here's the thing: January and February are sales kick-off season. Every sales team comes back with a new target, and the company flies, buses or drives them somewhere to align, celebrate last year's top performers and get them fired up. That's stage, sound, an MC, a DJ, catering, a team-build and an awards night. Often all in one booking.
We run HowzitLive with the B&W Productions crew, who produce corporate events across Gauteng. This is the vendor-side view of SKO season. If you're the one planning the kick-off, read the step-by-step SKO planning guide instead.
Why SKOs are your first big money window
- It's a habit. In Gartner's peer survey of sales leaders, 60% hold an SKO once a year, and 68% planned to meet in person.
- It's Q1. Most organisations hold their SKO in January–February to line up with the start of the year's targets.
- It's cheaper season for venues. Venues booked in November charge peak year-end rates. The same venue in February can be discounted, so planners have budget left for production and entertainment.
- It's two days, not two hours. Two days is the common sweet spot, which means day rates, an awards dinner in between and more hours for you.

What SKO planners expect from vendors
An SKO is a business event with a stage, not a party with a PowerPoint. The client is usually the sales or marketing team (Gartner found sales runs 82% of SKOs, marketing 62%), and they're judged on whether the SKO moved Q1. So they want suppliers who make their life easy:
| Planner expects | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Run-of-show discipline | You hit cues to the second: walk-up music, fade for the CEO, lights for the reveal. |
| Clear, comparable quotes | Itemise set-up, hours, travel, overtime and kit. No surprises on the invoice. |
| Theme alignment | Team-builds, décor and branding that match the SKO message, not a generic package. |
| Corporate-safe content | Clean lyrics, an MC who reads the room, no edgy jokes in front of the board. |
| Paperwork on request | Liability cover, CoC for temporary power, music licences, staff lists for venue access. |
| Backup plans | Spare kit, a standby person, and power backup on anything that plugs in. |
| Dietary and faith awareness | Halaal options, and Ramadan timing for February events (from about 7–8 Feb 2027). |
Nail the boring stuff and you're the supplier they rebook for the year-end in November.
The deadlines: when SKO briefs land
SKO guides tell planners to start 16–20 weeks out and lock the venue at 12–16 weeks. For a late-January or early-February kick-off, that puts venue decisions around October, and supplier briefs in November and December. The catch: that's exactly when you're flat out with year-ends. AV and production companies are booked out October–December, so planners who leave tech to January get what's left.
| When | What's happening | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Now – mid-Nov | Venues locked, agendas drafted | Get listed, send your SKO package to planners you know |
| Mid-Nov – mid-Dec | Supplier briefs and quotes | Quote fast. A same-week reply beats a perfect one in January. |
| Early Jan | Run of show, final numbers | Confirm cues, timings, load-in, staff names |
| 13 Jan onward | Schools are back; SKOs start | Deliver. Ask for the year-end rebook before you pack up. |
| Feb | Peak SKO month | Watch Mining Indaba (8–11 Feb, Cape Town) and Meetings Africa (22–24 Feb, Sandton) for travel and hotel squeeze |

How to pitch an SKO planner
- Lead with their goal. "Energy for the awards walk-ups" or "a team-build that teaches your new pitch" beats "we have lekker speakers".
- Package for two days. Day-one plenary cover, awards-dinner party, day-two breakouts. One quote, one contact.
- Show corporate proof. A clip from a conference or awards night is worth ten club videos.
- Bundle with a partner. DJ plus percussion, caterer plus coffee bar, photographer plus same-day recap. Planners love fewer suppliers.
- Be clear on price. Corporate DJ packages in SA are published from about R2,000 to R10,000 an hour with sound and lights, and sax players from about R2,750 to R20,000+. Wherever you sit, say exactly what's included.
- Answer within a day. Q4 is busy for planners too. Gartner's survey found the Q4 close was the top SKO challenge (35%).

Is your business SKO-ready?
Big SKOs: safety paperwork
For the 500+ shows, the producer handles the safety file, but you'll be asked for your part: staff lists, CoCs, risk notes for anything with heat, height or power. SASREA ties its 2,000 threshold to the venue's certified capacity, not the headcount on the day, so don't assume a 600-person SKO is exempt. Our SASREA safety documents guide for vendors covers what to have ready. For the production side of the big ones, B&W's large-scale SKO production guide shows how the 500–3,000-person builds come together.

Frequently asked questions
When is sales kick-off season in South Africa?
Most companies hold SKOs in January and February to line up with the new year's targets. In 2027, schools reopen on 13 January, so kick-offs typically start from mid-January and run through February.
When should vendors pitch for SKO work?
Planners are advised to start 16–20 weeks out and lock venues at 12–16 weeks, so supplier briefs for late-January and February SKOs usually land in November and December. Pitch before the year-end rush swallows your inbox.
What vendors does a sales kick-off need?
Typically AV, sound and staging crew, an MC, a DJ (sometimes with live percussion or sax), photographers and videographers, caterers, team-building providers, and branding and print. Larger SKOs add décor, mobile bars and more production crew.
What do corporate SKO planners look for in a supplier?
Reliability and clarity: run-of-show discipline, itemised quotes, corporate-safe content, backup kit, and paperwork such as liability cover, electrical CoCs and music licences on request.
